Sizing

Your ring has both a band size and a face size. You can find your band size by getting measured at a local jeweler, or by using Balfour's at-home sizing guide. If you're having difficulty wrapping the paper around your finger, try using a string and then measuring the string against the paper ruler! Band sizes range from 2 to 15 and increment in quarter sizes (7, 7.25, 7.5, ...)

The face sizes vary based on how you want your ring to look on your hand, but generally people will choose a face size so that the ring is about the width of their finger. The following table shows the average ring face size based on band size:

FAQ

If you don't see your question below, please contact us at classring@hsa.net

There's something wrong with my ring. What should I do?

Please contact Balfour at 800-225-3687. Resizing's are free of charge. If the error is Balfour's (aka wrong size or shield), Balfour will remake your ring free of charge. If the error is the customer's, you will have to pay a remake fee.

When can I order my ring?

You can order your ring anytime as a junior or senior at the College or Extension School and as a student at one of the graduate schools: HSPH, HGSE, HLS, HBS.

If you are an HMS or HSDM student and would like to assist in designing a department ring, please contact us via email.

Can alumni order?

Yes, absolutely!

I would like to create a new ring design! Where do I get started?

1. Send a ring design to classring@hsa.net. A club/team/department logo is sufficient. (Note: You need at least three people from your group who are going to use the new ring design to order a ring in order for Balfour to create the molds.)

2. Balfour creates a digitized ring design and sends it back (1 week)

3. Student organization approves the ring design (hopefully <1 week)

4. Ring design is created with three paid orders for rings (3 months)

5. Rings are created and sent out (6-8 weeks)

Can I choose a customized design for both the left and right sides?

Yes! The default option is your house shield on the left side and Johnston gate on the right side, but you can change these defaults. Please see the designs section to see the different options available for both sides.

What are the differences between the different types of metals?

Celestrium is a jeweler’s stainless steel.Argentium Premium Silver (93.5%) is whiter and brighter than Sterling silver (92.5%).  Argentium is 100% nickel-free, hypoallergenic and antibacterial. It is highly tarnish resistant.10k, 14k, and 18k designates the amount of pure gold in each ring.  Gold rings are available in yellow, white and rose gold.

What are your payment plans like?

We only accept debit and credit card payments. You can either choose to pay the full amount or pay in 3 month installments with the initial down payment being 1/3 of the full cost.

Which finger do people normally wear their ring on?

People generally wear the Harvard Ring on their ring finger of their right hand. Some opt for their middle or pinky finger though.

When will I receive my ring?

You will have your ring mailed to you 6-8 weeks after you order it (with the exception of new ring designs - please see question #4). Juniors who order prior to the January ring sale will have their rings presented to them at the Harvard Ring Ceremony during Junior Parents’ Weekend in the spring.

Can I get engravings on the inside?

Definitely! We offer a free engraving on the inside of the Harvard Ring up to 18 characters including spaces. If you would like to have more characters, you can have a second line of engraving added for $5.

Do you have a warranty policy?

Yes, all Harvard Rings have Balfour’s limited lifetime guaranteed of free resizing, reshipping, and refinishing. If you lose your ring, we will even replace it (just pay the cost of the deductible and shipping/handling- this cost varies based on ring size, metal type, etc) for the next four years. You can also extend your warranty to ten years for a fee at the time of purchase. Please keep your receipt. Please contact 800-225-3687 for instructions on how to redeem the policy.

What are the advantages of the different karats?

There is no substitute for gold. Its rich color holds a luster that lasts a lifetime. Its durability ensures that your investment doesn’t diminish over the years. The karat determines how much pure gold is in the ring. 18K and 14K have a greater percentage of pure gold in them than 10K and are considered shinier and better quality metals. Most gold sold and purchased in the US is 14K gold. If you wear other gold jewelry, you may want the color and luster to closely match. Balfour uses the jewelry industry standards for gold metal composition which are: 18K – 75% pure gold, 14K – 58% pure gold, 10K – 42% pure gold. Most who order a Harvard Ring choose gold for their ring metal.

Can I return a ring that I ordered?

According to our refund policy, rings are not eligible for return. If you have a degree or date change, those changes can be made at no additional cost. If you do not graduate for any reason, you can receive a refund.
